​In front of the window in the 3rd bay of the aisle we see the life-size statue of St Peter, a replica of the famous statue in St Peter’s in Rome, reminding us that as Catholics we believe that St Peter (whose name means ‘rock’) is the ‘foundation stone’ of the Church’s unity, appointed by Christ our Lord Himself. St Peter’s current successor as ‘Head of the Church on earth’ is the Pope, who lives where Peter was martyred, on the Vatican Hill in Rome.
