Last of all, before we return to the west end of the Church, we see the English Martyrs’ window, installed and blessed by Bishop Cleary in 1974 to commemorate the canonisation of the forty English martyrs of the Reformation era. The window’s central panel shows the Blessed Trinity in the form seen in the painted altarpiece at the Venerable English College in Rome, where many of the martyrs trained for ordination before returning to England to suffer and die for the priesthood and faithfulness to the Catholic religion alone. Among the lists of the martyrs are pictured, on the left the Tower of London, and on the right the gallows at Tyburn. In the small trefoil lights above are, on the left the arms of Pope Paul VI who canonised the martyrs, and on the right the arms of Bishop Cleary.
