Further on we pass the side door which would have led into a porch beneath the great tower had it ever been built. Now it leads into the car park. Next to it is the statue of St Antony of Padua, the 13th century Franciscan Saint who is very popular in most Catholic Churches, and although he was Portuguese, he is Italy’s most popular saint. He is shown as he was once seen by one of his brethren, conversing with the child Jesus whom he held in his arms.
