Just beyond the rail, under an ornate wooden canopy, stands the large statue of our Lady carrying her infant son. She is crowned and holds a large sceptre, showing her royal state as sinless Mother of God. At the foot of the sceptre, which we see is also a lance, she is piercing the head of the serpent who is Satan, in the form in which he beguiled Eve in the Garden of Eden. This reminds us that Mary is the ‘New Eve’, and as such, she is the Mother of all who live in Christ (as the first Eve is the mother of the entire human race). Where Satan conquered Eve and tempted her to disobey God, now he is himself conquered by Mary who is totally obedient to God’s will.
