Beginning from the steps leading into the West Door on Snow Hill, the first significant item to see is the tympanum, or arch, over the principal west door itself. This is a fine carving of the Calvary, which is the crucified Christ with our Church’s two patron saints, His Mother our Lady St Mary, and His beloved disciple St John the Evangelist on either side. Beneath are written the words spoken after Christ’s death by the Centurion, ‘Truly, this was the Son of God’, a key element of our faith. Far above, on the gable end of the Church looking west 70 ft (21.3m) above the ground, is another stone Calvary which can even be seen from far away.
